Internship Opportunity

Title: Communications Intern

Reports to: ColorsNW Magazine Assistant Editor

Compensation: Unpaid/Available for college credit

Schedule: Flexible 20 hours per week / 4 months (or one school term) commitment

Position Summary
The ColorsNW Communications Internship program provides critical hands-on experience to prospective journalists in the magazine publishing industry. As part of a small but dynamic staff, our Communications Intern will play a valuable role in the operations of our monthly magazine, by helping coordinate administrative procedures, assisting the editorial department throughout the production cycle, and working with the Assistant Editor on circulation duties, as assigned. Due to the nature of the magazine production process, the Communications Intern may also have the opportunity to gain experience in the sales and marketing division of the company, when time allows. Interns may expect an intersection of roles and responsibilities, inherent within small staff settings. This is not solely an “editorial internship” or a “graphic design internship” or an “administrative internship,” but a unique combination of many internship responsibilities that will best prepare student journalists for any future career path in publishing.

Position Goals
By the completion of the 4-month internship, the Communications Intern will have one (or more, if applicable) published byline articles in ColorsNW Magazine. The intern will also gain skills for researching/fact-checking, copy-editing, photography, and layout. The goal of the internship is to give students interested in magazine journalism a well-rounded experience encompassing all areas of the publishing industry, as well as skills to assist in the functioning of a small business venture. Above all, the goal of this program is to develop confidence and a commitment to social justice through media experience.

Requirements
Interns must demonstrate writing and editing skills. Preferred applicants will demonstrate an understanding of multicultural and diversity issues, and an awareness of local news and events relating to social justice work. Must be organized, punctual, articulate – all characteristics of successful journalists.

We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity.
